Sprained ankle; Rest or Physio?

Ankle twist (sprain) are very common problems seen in a physiotherapy clinic. The ankle-foot is an unstable area that is easily injured. Some people have more instability in the ankle-foot than others. Twist ankle-foot may happen to athletes during running or jumping, or to anyone who suddenly puts a twisting force on the area around the ankle. In some bad cases, a bone may break during the twist.

After the twist, person may have pain, swelling, stiffness and difficulty walking. Naturally injured person is advised to rest, but rest alone may not be helpful for healing.

For the first 3 days after an ankle twist follow this protocol:

- Rest, apply Ice, Use bandage around the ankle (correct figure of 8 ), Keep the leg and ankle elevated.

- Take some anti-inflammatory medications if prescribed by your doctor to help control the pain and swelling

- Use crutches for walking if stepping is painful.

- Don’t rest too long, as resting the ankle for extended period will result in your tissue being healed and recovered in the wrong directions after the injury. This will lead to a weak and wobbly or stiff  ankle and more prone to injury.

Physiotherapy assessment can help understanding the reason for your ankle injury, as it may have been caused by your foot moving too much.

Physiotherapy treatment will help with speedy and better  healing of the ankle, and preventing future injuries .

If you have had ankle twist once, it is highly likely that you will have it again, as your tissues are weaker now.

During physiotherapy we also ask you a number of questions and conduct a number of tests, to assess the status of your problem.

The pain in your ankle and foot can be addressed with ultrasound and massage, which will also help reduce the wrong model of healing in your ankle ligaments.

The major part of your program however is exercises. This will help giving your legs more strength and stability while reducing pain and stiffness.

Healing a sprained ankle may take 2 to 8 weeks, however with a correct physiotherapy program, recovery will be much faster and you will have a much stronger ankle.
