Tips on improving your health

Diet-friendly barbecues

Who can resist a summer backyard barbecue with hamburgers, sausages, fat-dripping ribs, pork chops, macaroni and cheese and potato salad? It's a heart attack waiting to happen, but who cares? It tastes good, and that's all that matters. If you are physically fit and indulge once in a while, you may be able to burn off the extra calories pretty easily, but for the rest of us, there are healthy ways to enjoy our barbecues.

Chicken

This is one of the most popular meats served at barbecues. It contains fewer calories and is delicious when grilled on the barbecue. Be sure to remove the skin first.

Veggie burgers and sausages

These taste great and are a good alternative for fat-laden hamburgers and sausages. Served on a whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and relish, they are delicious, filling and contain less calories than their meat alternatives.

Fish

Fish is delicious when filleted and cooked on the grill. There are many varieties to suit all tastes. They are rich in Omega 3 which protects your heart.

Shrimps

These can be barbecued whole, or on skewers. Either way they are a sensational addition to your barbecue.

Steak

If you must have steak, make sure it is lean and thinly sliced. Alternatively, it can be cut into cubes and added to kebabs.

Interesting vegetables

Kebabs are an interesting way to spice up the taste of vegetables. You may include meat and shrimp as mentioned before, and even fruit. Try cubes of carrots, bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, pineapple chunks, apple chunks, whatever catches your fancy. Skewer your combination, dip in barbecue sauce and place on the grill.

Healthy sides

Corn cooked on the grill is like nothing you have ever tasted. For the best flavour, remove some of the outer layers, then allow to cook evenly. When this is done, remove the last of the husk and allow to finish cooking on a slow heat.

Potatoes

These can be cooked in their jackets. Simply wrap in foil and place directly on the coals while the rest of the food is cooking. You may also make your own potato salad using low fat mayonnaise, rather than buying it from the grocery store.

There, you have some healthful choices for your next barbecue. Simply add a green salad and for dessert a fresh fruit salad. Wash down your meal with lots of fresh fruit juices or flavoured water and your guests will remember you for a long time to come.
